The popular horror K-drama Sweet Home will open its final chapter on July 19, 2024. Understandably, its conclusion will be the biggest focus.

For the unversed, the apocalyptic K-drama is based on the popular webtoon (same name) by Kim Carnby and Hwang Young-chan. Its first season, released in December 2020, garnered praise for its storytelling and focus on characters. As per some sources, it received 4.6 viewers ratings out of 5, crowning it as one of the best K-dramas in its genre.

However, its second season, released in December 2023, fell short of expectations. Yet the excitement for its season finale continues to peak across various social media. Here’s our take on the possible issues and ending of Sweet Home 3 based on the progress in the adaptation and webtoon. Let’s get right into it!

The Fate of Hyun Soo

Cha Hyun Soo, played by Song Kang, has struggled to balance his transformation into a monster and hold onto his humanity in the previous seasons. The finale is likely to provide the audience with a conclusion of this struggle.

However, one thing is for sure: Hyun Soo will prioritise the protection of his friends, whether through his usual humanity or by embracing his new identity.

In the webtoon, Hyun Soo sacrifices himself by completely turning into a monster to protect his friends. If the K-drama creators decide to stick to the original ending, then we must prepare for some tragic scenes.

Eun Hyuk’s Transformation

Eun Hyuk’s transformation was the cliffhanger at the end of Sweet Home’s second season. He emerged from a cocoon as a monster. The finale will likely be tense as it depicts the choices of Eun Hyuk and their possible effects on his sister, Eun-yoo.

In the webtoon, Eun Hyuk turns into a larger monster to protect Hyun Soo, continuing the theme of sacrifice.

Doctor Lim’s Vaccine

In the season where tragedy appears as an inevitable outcome, Doctor Lim’s vaccine is a silver lining. Therefore, the ‘happy ending’ of the series or any characters will depend on the results of the vaccine’s effects.

Unfortunately, in the webtoon, the results of the vaccine are left open to interpretation. They continue to provide hope for humanity but never crosses the border of uncertainty.

Exploration of Humanity in Sweet Home 3

Sweet Home is appreciated for its deep exploration of what separates a monster and a human from each other. It also addresses and challenges many beliefs about humanity and community. The exploration of these themes is likely to be the central focus of the conclusion, along with sacrifice.

These themes are also the centre of the webtoon where the conclusion highlights them more than ever before with the struggles of Hyun Soo and Eun Hyuk.

Ambiguous Endings and Future Possibilities

For better or worse, certain subplots and character arcs are likely to be left open to interpretation. These open endings will provide room for fans to discuss and conclude the series in their unique manner, much like the webtoon.

The original work does not address the exact origin of monsters apart from a few hints and theories. The aftermath of the characters’ survival and scientific experiments is also left to interpretation. There are also some hints providing a chance to reach a loop ending, thus, the season finale of Sweet Home K-drama is likely to be open-ended rather than tie all the loose ends.
