“One Piece,” Eiichiro Oda’s masterpiece, has been captivating audiences worldwide for over 25 years. The series is renowned for its intricate world-building, diverse characters, and meticulously crafted plotlines. Despite its long run and numerous arcs, the series is still filled with many unanswered questions and unresolved mysteries. Even though Oda has done a brilliant job framing the characters and the storyline, viewers have found some plot holes that, though not detract from the story’s overall value, are funny and perplexing to the fans. Let’s delve into these mysteries, exploring their potential implications and the theories surrounding them.
The One Piece Treasure
One of the greatest mysteries in “One Piece” is the One Piece Treasure, which was introduced for the first time by the Pirate King Gol D. Roger. During his execution, Roger confirmed the existence of the One Piece, the legendary treasure that is hidden on the final island, Laugh Tale, but the details of what they found remain unknown.
The Void Century, Poneglyphs and the Ancient Kingdom
The Void century is the 100-year period that has been deliberately erased from history. This era is believed to contain crucial information about the origins of the World Government, the Ancient Weapons, the Will of D., and the Ancient Kingdom—a powerful civilization that opposed the 20 Kingdoms, which later formed the World Government.
Poneglyphs are ancient stone tablets inscribed with information about the Void Century. Only a few people, such as Nico Robin, can read them. However, the World Government has hunted down these individuals to hide the secrets of the Void Century.
The Will of D
Many prominent characters in One Piece have the initial “D” in their names. This mysterious initial is associated with those who challenge the world order and bring significant change. Roger, the pirate king, was one such person, and he was the reason for the beginning of the Great Pirate Era. The true meaning of the Will of D., its origins, and its connection to One Piece and the Void Century are another significant and enduring mystery in One Piece.
The True Purpose of the World Government
At first glance, the World Government seems like a democratic organization that works to maintain peace and order in the world, but nothing could be further from the truth. The World Government is covered in a fog of secrets, which is highlighted by their efforts to erase the Void Century from history.
The Five Elders are the highest-ranking members of the World Government, but a mysterious figure known as ‘Imu’ appears to have authority over them. The identity of Imu and the five elders, their origins, and their ultimate goals for forming the World Government are among the greatest mysteries in ‘One Piece.’
Blackbeard’s Unique Abilities
Marshall D. Teach, famous as Blackbeard, is another mysterious being in the series. He possesses the ability to wield multiple Devil Fruits, a feat considered impossible in the established rules of the One Piece world. Some speculate that Blackbeard has eaten another devil fruit that split his soul into three parts, making it possible for him to eat two devil fruits without dying. But there are no concrete proofs; hence, nothing can be said with surety.
Shanks’ True Strength and Goals
Shanks, one of the Four Emperors, is a character shrouded in mystery. Despite not having any Devil Fruit, he became one of the Four Emperors, and his feat of stopping the war in Marineford says a lot about his strength. But his full power is still a mystery.
Another mystery surrounding Shanks is his relationship with the Five Elders. His private meeting raised many questions about his true identity and motivations.
Rocks D. Xebec
Rocks D. Xebec is another mysterious character who is mentioned frequently in the series. He was the captain of the Rock Pirates, and Whitebeard, Big Mom, and Kaido were his crew members. The alliance formed by Garp and Roger defeated him, but what happened to him after that is still unknown.
Joy Boy
Joy Boy is another puzzle and a significant being from the Void Century. He is mentioned a lot in “One Piece,” and there are indications that he is related to a prophecy about a future savior who will liberate the world. He is deeply intertwined with the series’ core mysteries, and it is mentioned that he is closely tied to the legendary treasure, One Piece.
Plot Holes and Inconsistencies
There aren’t many major plot holes in “One Piece,” the series is very well written, but some small plot holes are worth mentioning.
- Shanks loses his arm to a puny sea monster. Sea monsters are powerful creatures and can easily devour normal people, but Shanks by no means is a normal person. He is a Yonko, and losing the arm with which he used to wield his sword to an ordinary sea monster cannot be justified. People say it was symbolic, but I think it was too much, even if it was to symbolize Shanks betting on Luffy.
- Skypiea was introduced as the most mysterious island. We saw how Luffy was humiliated by others for his dream of going there. Later in the series, we see that many other characters have been to Skypiea. This inconsistency is puzzling.
- The varying power levels of characters, especially during crucial battles, can sometimes seem inconsistent with previously established abilities. Like how Luffy was able to defeat Crocodile, one of the Seven Warlords, so early in the story but could not face Mihawk and had a hard time against Doflamingo.
“One Piece” is full of adventure, action, comedy, and countless mysteries. Fans have been waiting for a long time for these mysteries to unveil and answer their unanswered questions. Eiichiro Oda has masterfully woven a complex narrative that keeps audiences guessing and theorizing about how these mysteries will be resolved and what new revelations will come to light. The journey to uncover the truth is as thrilling as the adventure itself, making “One Piece” a timeless epic that captivates audiences worldwide.
