The Demon Slayer Corps is an organization dedicated to protecting humanity from demons. They have a structured ranking system based on their skills, experience, and accomplishments. This system comprises eleven ranks:

  • Mizunoto (lowest rank)
  • Mizunoe
  • Kanoto
  • Kanoe
  • Tsuchinoto
  • Tsuchinoe
  • Hinoto
  • Hinoe
  • Kinoto
  • Kinoe
  • Hashira (highest rank)

The journey of a Demon Slayer begins at Mizunoto, the lowest rank. After slowly working on their skill, acquiring enough strength and perfecting their breathing techniques, they progress through these ranks. Not much is mentioned about how a Demon Slayer progresses through the ranks, but to become a Hashira, a slayer either has to kill at least 50 demons after achieving the rank of a Kinoe or one Upper Moon Demon.

Tanjiro’s journey began with a tragic event: the slaughter of his family by demons and his sister Nezuko turning into a demon. After the incident, he met Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, from whom Tanjiro learned about the Demon Slayer Corps. Determined to avenge his family and cure his sister, he joins the team of warriors. Tanjiro and Nezuko met Sakonji Urokodaki, who trained Tanjiro on Mt. Sagiri for the Final Selection. Tanjiro passes the Final Selection test and starts his journey as a Mizunoto.

As Tanjiro embarked on various missions, he gradually ascended the ranks of the Demon Slayer Corps. He faced numerous formidable demons before the Hashira Training Arc and showed exceptional growth. The boy played crucial roles in defeating powerful foes like Rui, the Lower Moon Five, and Enmu, the Lower Moon One. His confronted the powerful Upper Moon Demons, such as Akaza, Gyutaro and Daki, Gyokko and Hantengu.

Throughout the series, Tanjiro has demonstrated immense courage, resilience, and compassion while gradually improving his skills and mastering Water Breathing and the Hinokami Kagura, also known as Sun Breathing.

By the time the Hashira Training Arc commences, Tanjiro has reached the rank of Kanoe, which signifies Tanjiro’s progress through the years and his proficiency in combat. Along with Tanjiro, Inosuke and Zenitsu have also moved to Kanoe. Tanjiro’s rank may seem low when his feats are taken into account, but we need to keep in mind that he has not been in the Demon Slayer Corps for an extended period compared to others.

But at this point does his rank even mean anything? He has fought Upper Moon Demons along with other Hashiras. Tanjiro was in the team that killed an Upper Moon Demon for the first time in 100 years and is the first to awaken his Demon Slayer Mark, a feat that even the Hashiras have not achieved yet. We have seen Tanjiro go toe to toe against formidable enemies and emerge victorious. The ‘Hashira Training Arc’ shows Tanjiro training with other Hashiras, each one teaching him different skills. After training under the Hashiras, Tanjiro will inevitably come out stronger and play a significant role in the upcoming battle against Muzan Kibutsuji and his followers.

Tanjiro Kamado’s journey from a humble Mizunoto to a skilled Kanoe is a reflection of his incredible determination, resilience, and unwavering commitment to his mission. His rise through the ranks of the Demon Slayer Corps highlights not only his natural talent but also his ability to learn and adapt in the face of adversity. From his initial training days under Sakonji Urokodaki to his mastery of the Dance of the Fire God and his intensive sessions with the Hashiras, each milestone in Tanjiro’s journey showcases his development from a novice Demon Slayer into a formidable warrior.
