The American rapper and singer Bia joined the latest hip-hop trend of feuding with diss tracks. On June 1, 2024, she shared a song titled “Sue Me,” that seemingly takes a jab at Cardi B.
The track was filled with heavy claims, including that she cheated with the “WAP” singer’s husband, Offset, in their home. In the same verse, she implies that Cardi B doesn’t write her own songs and mimics her speech.
For the uninitiated, the track “Sue Me” is a direct response to Cardi B’s verses in GloRilla and Meghan Thee Stallion’s “Wanna Be (Remix),” which was released this Friday.
In “Wanna Be (Remix),” the 31-year-old “I Like It” singer seemingly disses Bia by stating that she thought the latter was shelved, further adding a wordplay with the verse “nobody wanna be ya.”
How did Bia’s feud with Cardi B start?
The two talented rappers didn’t always throw beef-verses at each other. In 2021, Bia congratulated Cardi B on “breaking the barriers for the gorls” by tagging her on X (former Twitter). In follow-up tweets, she continued to praise her work ethic, growth, and achievements saying that it is not an easy feat.
However, their friendship soon took a turn when Bia left a cryptic message implying that the “Bodak Yellow” singer was trying to copy her style. On March 5, 2024, the “Whole Lotta Money” singer left three quirky-faced emoticons (🥴🥴🥴) in reply to netizen Brownie’s (@Pretie_brown) tweet stating that “Bia is on Cardi B’s mood board a lot.”
This cryptic response triggered Cardi B’s verse in “Wanna Be (Remix),” and the two rappers launched into a full course of beefing. However, the verse itself wasn’t the only friction that sparked “Sue Me.”
A few hours before the release of “Sue Me,” Cardi B jumped on an IG live to address the ongoing issues. She refuted the allegations against her by stating that she didn’t like anything about Bia, including her music and style.
Additionally, she said that both artists had jumped on a call, but things didn’t work out. In the end, she stated that she would sue the singer if she continued alleging that she cheated on Offset. Thus, the diss track “Sue Me” was added to the Beef-verse track list of 2024.
A year of diss tracks
Although lyrical ridicule tracks have continued to be an essential part of hip-hop culture, they found a fresh wave of interest in 2024 with the Drake—Kendrick Lamar feud.
On May 3, 2024, Drake and Lamar engaged in a musical takedown with the songs “6:16 in LA,” “Meet the Grahams,” and “Family Matters.” As per NBC, 19 popular diss tracks have already been released this year, and we are barely halfway through.
Many artists, including J. Cole, Metro Boomin, Future, Nicki Minaj, and Megan Thee Stallion, have released diss tracks this year. According to Tia Tyree, a professor of communication studies at Howard University, social media plays a major role in this spike in diss tracks.
“Social media allows us to hear [the diss tracks] the second it’s literally completed,” said Tyree to NBC. Moreover, through the comments function, fans are becoming an essential part of this culture that was formerly limited to radio and albums.
Now, everyone can share their two cents about the issues and who is lyrically superior. They also suggest what should be added to the verses and possible responses.
This makes the rap beefs exciting and attracts more listeners, resulting in better streams. Thus, 2024 is a good year for people who enjoy lyrical beef, and we are likely to come across more ahead.
