Pachinko season 1” followed the shocking breakup of Sunja (Kim Min-ha) and Hansu (Lee Min-ho), leading to the former’s marriage with Isak (Noh Sang-hyun).

After their rushed wedding, the newlywed couple came to Ikaino, Japan and began a new life of financial struggles and happiness. They also welcomed their children Noa and Mozasu as they further settled in the streets of Osaka.

However, the happiness soon came to a standstill as the Japanese officials arrested Isak for participating in anti-imperialism activities. In the following scenes it’s disclosed that Isak was leading a dual life of church’s pastor and a revolutionary.

Ever since, fans have been eagerly awaiting answers about Isak’s fate. “Pachinko Season 2” promises to shed light on his whereabouts, detailing the life of revolutionaries of the time and the impact of his absence on Sunja’s life.

The Long Shadows of World War II

If the first season spent quality time in establishing the characters and their delicate dynamics; then the second season is going to highlight their resilience in a war-ridden nation. Pachinko Season 2’s teaser captures these moments through the unsettlement of Osaka, under the rain of leaflets announcing the upcoming war.

Amidst this, Sunja finds herself in a perilous situation. Forced to make unimaginable choices to protect her family and survive. The war will undoubtedly test her unwavering spirit, as she navigates a world consumed by violence and uncertainty.

The Return of Hansu: Rebirth of An Anti-Hero As Lover and Father

Right when the small world of Sunja burns in front of her eyes, Hansu, her estranged lover and father of her firstborn Noa, returns as a figure of stability.

One can debate that his character is the most intriguing plot thread left dangling from the first season. Afterall, Hansu is a dashing man of a tortured past with hands painted in the blood of many. However, he is also a lover and father entangled with Sunja.

As the war intensifies, the frayed threads of their past are going to intertwine in unexpected ways. Forcing them to confront the consequences and make difficult choices. Thus, the complex interplay of love, desire, and regret, is likely to be a focal point of the new season.

The Rise of a New Generation: Solomon and the Pachinko Parlour

Solomon takes center stage in upcoming season

As the older generation grapples with the challenges of war and its aftermath, the spotlight shall shift to the younger generation. Solomon, Sunja’s grandson, appears to have pivotal screen time in “Pachinko Season 2”. His journey of self-discovery and connection to the family’s legacy of endurance is likely to take centre stage.

Meanwhile, the opening of a pachinko parlour by Sunja’s son, Mozasu, is expected to be a significant moment in Season 2. Although the series has announced its departure from the original symbolism of Pachinko machine, a game of luck; it shall be interesting to see what this venture symbolises in the fresh narrative.

Identity, Assimilation, and the Korean-Japanese Divide

At its core, “Pachinko K-drama” continues to remain a profound exploration of identity and belonging wrapped as a family saga. The upcoming season is likely to delve deeper into the complexities faced by the wartime Korean immigrants and their descendants in Japan.

The series shall also continue to weave the challenges of balancing Korean heritage with Japanese assimilation by capturing the struggles of Noa, Mozasu and Solomon.

Moreover, the series will trace the narratives of middle-class Japanese families and their descendants with the new character Naomi. Providing a balanced depth to the show while completing its coverage of historical events. It will be particularly interesting to see how the creators address the historical context of war when Solomon and Naomi, with two different family legacies intervene in romance.

The Pains of History, Human Connection, and Pachinko Season 2

“Pachinko,” the novel as well as the series, has consistently blended grand history with intimate narratives. It has traced the uncertainty of times and conflicts of cultural heritage through the ties among its characters. If the second season remains true to its original inspiration, then audiences will be able to trace the history’s bloodlines in the troubled narratives of Noa.

The AppleTV+ original series shall also include tales of duty, love, humanity, endurance, helplessness, loss and cruelty through old and new supporting characters including Kyung-hee and Yang-jin. However, the fans of the novel must expect to experience plenty of new narratives as the creators are taking liberty in the cinematic retelling.

Last but not the least, the audiences can look forward to another masterpiece soundtrack. A snippet of which we already enjoyed through the orchestral cover of Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” by BLACKPINK’s Rosé.
